Easy Ways to Work out at Home

Working out in the gym can be daunting, not to mention very expensive. The good news is that there are so many at home workouts being produced now, so there is no need to go to the gym in order to see amazing results. I work out at home and at the gym, on alternating days of the week, so here are a few of my top tips for working out at home, followed by some of my favourite guides.

1).  Invest in some basic equipment.
Although it is possible to work out and see results with no equipment, your life will be much easier, and your workouts far more varied if you own some basic equipment. I would recommend investing in a set of dumbbells, a yoga/exercise mat, some resistance bands and some ankle weights as you become more advanced. I enjoy being able to add weights/resistance in order to increase the difficulty of my workout.

2). Cardio can be done in a small space without equipment!
I, like many others, use to think that I couldn't do cardio unless I went outside (and I live in a country that always rains!) or went to the gym and used equipment for hours on end. However, I now do HIIT as my cardio each week, which is not only quicker, but can be done in the comfort of my own home. HIIT stands for High Intensity Interval Training and consists of short bursts of high intensity work followed by a short break, repeated in sets of 7/8 different exercises. These exercises normally are done using body weight only (such as starjumps, burpees, squats) and can be done in a relatively small space. The benefits of HIIT are amazing, so I would highly recommend doing research into these, and finding some HIIT workouts on YouTube or Pinterest to try out at home.

3). Give yourself a dedicated space.
I'm lucky enough to have an office type space that is perfect for working out in at home. I use this as my dedicated workout space, and this helps me mentally focus when I am exercising. I find that if I use my bedroom, lounge, etc. then it is extremely distracting and I don't end up working hard!

4). Mix it up!
When at the gym, the extensive equipment means that it is easy to shake up your workout routine each day. At home, it is easy to slip into the habit of doing the same thing every time you workout, and end up de-motivating yourself. Luckily, due to technology, there is a wealth of resources to choose from for your next workout. I love finding new channels on YouTube or printables on Pinterest to try at home. Simply type in something like 'at home HIIT workout' or 'at home beginners workout'. Some of my favourite channels are Blogilates, Fitness Blender, Carly Rowena and Em Sheldon.

5). Be Strict!
It is so easy when you don't have the motivation of paying for a gym membership to become lazy and not bother working out. However, be strict with yourself, and motivate yourself to get up and workout at home! Find the time of day that works best for you, and put your workouts in your diary to help you remember. Simple things like setting out your cute workout clothes, finding fun new workouts to try, and scrolling through motivating quotes can help!

I've tried a few at home workout guides over the last few years, and will do in depth posts focusing on them over the course of the next few months, but here are some that I recommend.

1). PIIT28
PIIT28 is that at home HIIT training/Pilates 28 day guide by Cassey Ho of Blogilates. There are 6 workouts a week, each focusing on a different body area. Each workout consists of a set of 7 exercises done for 45 seconds with a 15 second rest repeated 4 times. I saw great results doing this, and am excited to redo this programme, and progress to  the 2.0 and 3.0 guides.

2). Kayla Itsines' Bikini Body Guide
The arguably most famous workout guide on the internet. This guide gives you 3 workouts of 28 minutes a week, and instructs you to do 3 low intensity workouts a week as well. Although this guide gave me fab results, I found that the difficulty of the workouts was very demotivating and I did begin to dread the workouts instead of look forward to them, which led to me eventually modifying a lot of them!

3). Carly Rowena's Get Gorgeous Guide
This is a guide that is fairly new to the market, and one which I only purchased yesterday. Carly Rowena (a PT, fitness blogger, and YouTuber) has created a 12 week exercise plan aimed at toning the body and helping you feel better within yourself. The format appears to be set based, with around 5 exercises per set, and the number of reps and sets dependent on level.

I hope you have found this post useful, and please comment below if you have any questions! I look forward to starting Carly's Get Gorgeous Guide next week and reporting back with my results!
